Evaluating Social Programs Workshop

Picture 1. J-PAL SEA Training held in March 2018, Jakarta

Although the idea of impact evaluation is intuitively simple to grasp, in practice there are many pitfalls that can bias results, or otherwise hinder our ability to answer important questions: at best, these can make the impact evaluation uninformative, and at worst, they can be misleading. J-PAL is committed to build capacity for and support others to become avid users and producers of evidence.

The 2-Day training workshop will be delivered in Bahasa Indonesia. Programmed by J-PAL Southeast Asia, attendees will be introduced to the use of randomized evaluations in evaluating the impact of important social programs. The course balances the knowledge regarding field experiments with highly interactive case studies and group work which aims to equip trainees in becoming better producers and users of evidence. In particular, attendees will be introduced to the following topics:

  1. What is impact evaluation?
  2. How do we measure impact?
    a. What are the different types of methodologies that can be used to measure impact?
    b. How should we mitigate measurement errors when collecting data?
    c. How much sample do we need to increase the precision of our impact evaluation?
  3. Introduction to randomized evaluation for conducting impact evaluation.

This course is open for researchers and practitioners involved in academic research or conducting evaluations. Through a mixture of lectures and interactive group work, we hope participants will easily grasp the technical contents. The group work will be led by training assistants who have first-hand experience in managing the conduct of randomized evaluation.

The training is led by Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab Southeast Asia (J-PAL SEA), in collaboration with Indonesian Regional Science Association (IRSA).
